Leather Dye Calculator

Calculate leather dye volume by surface area, leather type, and number of coats. Avoid running short mid-project.

Inputs

sq ft

Total area to dye - both sides if you dye both

Veg-tan drinks dye; chrome-tan resists it

Alcohol dyes penetrate and need more coats; water-based sits nearer the surface

Even color usually takes 2-3 thin coats, not one heavy one

How thirsty this hide is - test a scrap if unsure

Tips

1
Vegetable-tanned leather absorbs more dye than chrome-tanned. Plan for extra.
2
Second and third coats need about 70% of the first coat's volume.

Open formula

Volume = Area × Base Rate × Coats Factor × Absorption Factor
Coats Factor = 1 + 0.7 × (Coats - 1)

Base coverage rate varies by dye type and leather. Additional coats require decreasing amounts as the leather becomes saturated.
